The sequel to Sherlock Holmes Guy Ritchie sees the return of Robert Downey Jr. in the role of Homes, of Jude Law as Dr. Watson and Rachel McAdams in the role of Irene Adler.
Among the new entries in the Swedish actress cast Noomi Raptor (Men Who Hate Women), which plays a key role and will be the female lead, British actor Stephen Fry in the role of Sherlock's older brother, Mycroft Holmes, a man indispensable to the British government, which often plays the role of human calculation, and Jared Harris (Fringe, Mad Men, The Ward) in the role of Professor Moriarty, Holmes's nemesis in the works of Conan Doyle, who controls the criminals behind London the scenes.
Harris managed to get the role a week prima dell'inizio delle riprese del film, che si terranno a Londra come nel caso di Sherlock Holmes. Fin dall'inizio della produzione del film, cominciata nel 2008, sono nate diverse voci riguardanti i possibili candidati che avrebbero potuto interpretare Moriarty. Inizialmente c'erano state voci riguardanti una possibile partecipazione di Brad Pitt e Daniel Day Lewis.
Rispetto al primo film sono stati cambiati gli sceneggiatori. Non è però ancora chiaro se nel sequel verrà creata una nuova storia (come era già successo con la prima pellicola) o se verrà ripresa qualcuna delle storie originali di Conan Doyle. Considerando che il romanzo "L'ultima avventura" (contenuto nella raccolta Le memorie di Sherlock Holmes) è l'unico in cui compaiono sia Moriarty che Mycroft, si può presumere che potrà essere usato come base per la sceneggiatura di Sherlock Holmes 2.
